There is a saying that "dogs are the best teachers to teach you loyalty". This is also why it is the animal that is closest to and most attached to humans. However, their instincts from birth are still animals and do not fully understand the requirements of their owners. Even a purebred dachshund needs the following basic training:
1. Train and execute the sit command
#stand and sit command
– Step 1: Put the dog’s favorite food in front of the nose
– Step 2: Gradually bring the food from the nose to the top of the head so that the dog looks up
Step 3: Press down on the dog's hips with both hands to train the dog to sit
– Step 4: Shout the “Sit” command and feed the dog as a reward
#Command to lie down and sit down
– Step 1: Put the dog’s favorite food in front of the nose
Step 2: Gradually pull the food from bottom to top so the dog is facing forward.
Step 3: As it rises, support the dog's hips with both hands and remain seated.
– Step 4: Shout the “Sit” command and feed the dog as a reward
2. Standing command execution training
Step 1: Put the food on the dog's nose
Step 2: Gradually take the food away
– Step 3: When the reflex dog stands up, you call out the command "stand up".
– Step 4: Feed the dog as a reward
3. Train to perform the lie-down command
Step 1: When the dog is standing or sitting, place food in front of the nose
– Step 2: Gradually reduce food
Step 3: When the dog begins to lie down, call out the "lie down" command
– Step 4: Feed the dog as a reward
4. Train the Dachshund to stand still
– Step 1: Take the dog around
– Step 2: Stop and shout "Stand still"
Step 3: If the dog can stand still for a few seconds, immediately reward them with their favorite food or item. If the dog cannot stand still, hold them in place by hand
Rest for 2-3 seconds for the first time, and then increase the rest time until the go command is successfully executed.
Exercises 1, 2, 3, and 4 are done 10-15 times a day to get the dog used to the commands
5. Teach the Dachshund to shake hands
Step 1: Put the dog in a sitting position
Step 2: Gently lift one leg with your hands
– Step 3: Shout “Handshake” and reward the dog immediately
Dogs need a lot of practice to get used to commands
6. Train your dog to pick things up
– Step 1: Give the dog something to play with for about 10 seconds, you take it and run, and let the dog run
- Step 2: When the dog gets used to it, you start throwing things around 2m and then run to rob. Repeat a few times so the dog gets used to the reflex when the object is thrown and runs to steal it.
– Step 3: When the dog picks up the object and runs towards you, extend your hand and issue a “let go” command to let the dog get used to the command.
- Step 4: Level up the difficulty by throwing items farther and more often. Coupled with the "find" and "picked up" commands, the dogs behaved well and were rewarded with food to stimulate their spirits!
7. Train the dog to follow the owner
Step 1: Have the dog stand on your left
– Step 2: You take two steps forward, and if the dog is not following, gently pull on the leash to let them go forward, making sure the dog is on the same level as you.
– Step 3: Shout “Follow” and reward them if you can.
Initially, you should only take about 2-5 steps, then increase the number as the dog gets used to it. Need to do 10-15 times/day, in a quiet place, in an enclosed space, and do not use a leash to create comfort for the dog.
8. Train your dog to eat on command
-Leave the dog in the back, put the food bowl in the front, and when the dog rushes over, pull the leash to stop it and shout the command "don't eat". Let the dog lie still for about 2 minutes, and then shout "eat" to feed the dog
Repeat this until your next meal, increasing the wait time to about 4 minutes. Hold it multiple times and then let the dog get used to the command, only eat when it is commanded to "eat"
– For difficult-to-train dogs, be patient and train longer
9. Practice not letting your dog eat on the ground
- Choose an open space with few people, put a piece of meat on the ground, and let it go
- If the dog sees the food and wants to eat it, he immediately rushes. You shout "don't eat" and let them sit down. Then shout the command "get out", drag the dog away from the meat, and when you're done, reward the dog with food. It should be repeated several times until the dog gets used to the command.
10. Teach your dog to toilet in the right place
Exercise is essential when you are just starting with a dog.
– Step 1: Find or delineate the area where you want your dog to go to the toilet
– Step 2: Create a meal plan
Large dogs, usually eat two meals a day, 12 noon and 7 p.m. Small dogs typically eat 3 meals a day, 7 am, 12 pm, and 7 pm.
– Step 3: Observe and determine the expression and length of time the dog wants to go to the toilet. Usually, dogs go to the bathroom about 30 minutes after a meal.
– Step 4: Get your dog's toilet items in the right place
– Step 5: Train the dog to the toilet in the right place.
When the dog shows signs of going to the toilet, you shout "run here" and point to the location of the identified toilet body. If the dog doesn't understand, take it to that place, go to the toilet, and let them go somewhere else.
The next time the dog goes to the toilet, repeat the same operation and keep practicing until the dog is used to it.
Note: Choose only 1 fixed toilet position so the dog can easily identify it
For successful coaching, remember:
- Don't worry, you have to keep practicing every day, every month
- Teach dogs with love, don't hit people, don't put pressure on them
- Be self-disciplined during the coaching process, you need to lead the way and get the dog to obey
– The slogan is loud and clear, and the dog is easy to remember and distinguish.
– Do each movement in sequence, don’t accumulate many exercises at once
- A combination of timely rewards and punishments.
